About University of Nevada Las Vegas

UNLV was founded in 1957, as the Southern Division of the University of Nevada, by the Nevada Board of Regents, and it is currently located in Las Vegas, Paradise, Nevada, USA. It is believed that Las Vegas got its name from Rafael Rivera, back in 1829, who was a scout for a Mexican trading party and the first known non-Indian to set foot in Las Vegas Valley, which in English translation, would mean ‘’The Meadows’’.

Over the years, UNLV has grown into a renowned ‘’research-intensive university’’, according to The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, with a total undergraduate enrollment of nearly 22 000 students (2008), offering more than 200 educational programs in various study fields, leading to doctoral, master’s and bachelor’s degrees.

The athletic teams from UNLV are known as the Rebels, which cover 17 different sports areas, competing in the Mountain West Conference of the NCAA’s Division I, except in men’s soccer, for which sport, the Rebels compete in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

Here, at UNLV, there are many traditions, such as the annual Nevada Wolf Pack, which is a popular football game that bring excitement every time it happens in the heart of the UNLV Rebels fans, known as the Battle for Nevada.

The university is best known for its Men’s Basketball Program, brought to attention by Coach Jerry Tarkanian, between the 70’s and 90’s, the Runnin’ Rebels being ranked the 3rd most winning team Division I basketball history by percentage, after North Carolina and Kentucky.
